During
the Puja holidays in Aug-Sep 1956, Rangan’s father took him to Mettur dam as
he was one of the delegates of the Mettur Irrigation Conference sponsored by
the PWD, serving as a gazetted officer.
During one evening, Rangan visited Mettur dam with his father and was amazed by the huge sluice gates opening and closing to control the flow of water. It was at this time, Rangan wished to become an engineer and work hard to achieve. During the end of the year 1956, Rangan consulted his father and he gave consent to choose
Bifurcated
Course in Engineering from class 8 to 10 th Standard, utilising the unique
option available in Hindu High School for the period 1957,58 and 59-60.
Rangan never knew at this time, the stage is set for him to become an
engineer.
It
was also at this time, his father presented him with a small conference bag
to hold coins besides an additional Piggy Bank for collecting coins. Rangan started evincing interest in coin collection also.
