Metric System in India

Metric System in India - 1955

It was a huge change to metric system. The units of weights were changed to kilograms and units of volume were changed to litres. There were all sorts of conversions and confusions.

Rangan spent his time in understanding conversions and equivalents. He explained the conversions in Tamil to the Vegetable, fruit vendors and Provision Stores staff. He even stayed with them for a few hours for them to get familiarised with the system. Some of the vendors came to the home in Triplicane to learn about conversions to metric system.

As the vendors were used to old system, Rangan explained to the vendors, thumb rules for selling rates without loosing money, in the bargain.

It was a great learning and interacting experience for Rangan, which he enjoyed.
